When it comes to creating body avatars, hair is the diva of the digital world: complex, unpredictable, and intricate. It can make or break it…Nail the hair, and you elevate the look; botch it, and you might as well bin the avatar.

Some exciting new research has emerged. The research uses a technique where hair strands are reconstructed strand by stand from video. The approach enables a photo real representation of hair. The results are highly realistic hair styles that are physically accurate - the hair can then be relit and animated as if you were shaking your head! Check out the video below:

Research Paper: "Gaussian Haircut ✂️ Human Hair Reconstruction with Strand-Aligned 3D Gaussians", by Egor Zakharov, Vanessa Sklyarova, Michael J. Black, Giljoo Nam, Justus Thies, Otmar Hilliges from ETH Zurich, Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, Meta, Technical University of Darmstadt, ECCV 2024

These models can be exported to virtual environments like Unreal Engine, opening up endless possibilities. Imagine designers experimenting with avant-garde or culturally nuanced hairstyles on digital models that are lifelike.

So, forget bad AI hair days. The look of our avatars is getting a complete make over.
