Prada's new Re-Nylon collection is out.
Prada has rolled out a range of accessories and clothing made from regenerated nylon. This isn’t just any nylon. It’s nylon derived from ocean plastic, specifically from discarded fishing nets and other waste pulled from the sea. Re-Nylon is the next step in fabric technology and sustainable luxury - a textile crafted from Econyl, that can be endlessly regenerated without loss of quality, a true cyclical luxury. This is circular fashion and Prada have enlisted Benedict Cumberbatch and Sadie Sink to push the message in a slick documentary series.
The partnership with National Geographic and the SEA BEYOND program is smart, with a series of documentaries aiming to teach the world about ocean preservation.
Prada is doing its part, and that’s commendable, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle. The bigger question is whether the industry as a whole will continue to embrace these efforts, or if this will remain a niche initiative.
In the end, Prada’s Re-Nylon collection is a positive development, showcasing the brand’s genuine commitment to both innovation and sustainability. 1% of the proceeds from the Prada Re-Nylon for SEA BEYOND Collection benefit the SEA BEYOND educational program.
By reducing reliance on virgin materials, this process sets a new standard for sustainability in the luxury sector.
But like any good step forward, it raises the question: what’s next?
