What if you could generate an interactive 3D world for your brand from a single image?

That’s no longer a dream, it’s what AI can do today.  This is what is called spatially intelligent AI. AI that can model the world creating objects, places, and interactions in 3D space from just a single image, saving time and cost. This is in contrast to traditional CGI which requires detailed manual rendering. This week, I wanted to look at these new 'World Models' as they have the potential to re-imagine virtual shopping for fashion. Let’s have a look at one of the leaders in the field.

World Labs, a startup founded by AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li, has introduced its first project: an AI system that generates interactive 3D scenes from a single image. While many AI systems can create 3D models from photos, World Labs' unique approach allows users to explore and modify the generated scenes in real time. These scenes are rendered live in a browser, with adjustable camera angles and depth of field effects. Unlike some competitors, World Labs' scenes maintain consistency and obey basic physics, providing a more solid and realistic experience. The AI can also apply dynamic effects and animations, such as colour changes and lighting adjustments. The first product will be released in 2025.

Pretty cool.  Try it for yourself here. These worlds are not yet fully built - you will see that you cannot move everywhere, yet.

It's true that Interactive 3D worlds can be created today. The problem is that they cost hundreds, thousands, if not millions of dollars. They take a ton of time.

Although the system is still in an early preview phase, World Labs plans to improve the fidelity and interactivity of its worlds. The startup has raised $230 million from investors, including Andreessen Horowitz and Intel Capital, and is valued at over $1 billion. It aims to release its first product in 2025. The technology promises to revolutionise how digital worlds are created, making them more accessible and cost-effective than current methods.

What could it look like?

Imagine a future where fashion designers, retailers, and customers can immerse themselves in fully interactive, AI-created 3D environments to explore clothing and even fashion shows in real time. This technology could transform the way collections are showcased, offering a more dynamic, customisable shopping experience, and allowing for real-time collaboration in design and fit. As the lines between physical and digital fashion continue to blur, AI-driven 3D worlds could be the next frontier in revolutionising the fashion ecosystem.
